In August 2009, Typhoon Morakot brought torrential rain to Southern Taiwan, bringing the worst flood devastation to Taiwan since the "87 Disaster" of 1959. Within three days, the typhoon dropped a year's rain on Southern Taiwan, flooding the flat areas of Kaohsiung and causing landslides in the mountains. This catastrophic event was named the "88 Disaster." In Siaolin Village, Jiasian Township of the former Kaohsiung County, torrential rain caused massive landslides destroying more than one hundred homes between the ninth and eighteenth neighborhoods of the village. The area was covered in a landslide five stories high, and nearly five hundred residents were buried alive. Following the disaster, due to the large area of the landslide and an unwillingness to disturb the bodies buried underneath, the villagers decided not to excavate the site, which was left as an eternal burying place for the loved ones lost.
In order to commemorate the victims of this tragedy, on July 26, 2010, the Executive Yuan Morakot Post-Disaster Reconstruction Council, the Executive Yuan Council for Cultural Affairs and the Kaohsiung County government unveiled a memorial to the victims next to the Taizih Temple to the south of the original village. The monument is a sundial. According to designer Hsu Yi-cheng, the monument uses a huge piece of driftwood that faces at an angle to the sun and lies opposite the Nanzihsian Stream, guiding the villagers of Siaolin home.
On the top of the monument, a small bird in flight symbolizes a yearning for home. The bird in flight also symbolizes vitality, expressing hope for the future of the Siaolin village. The memorial was given the name "wangsiang," which can be translated as"looking homewood," in memory of the victims of August 9, 2009, and aims to bring hope and unity to those who survived the tragedy.
